After spending some fun and active days on Boracay Island, we took a boat and minibus to Kalibo. We planned to stay for four nights before going back to Manila.

Slow Pace

On Wednesday, we started the morning slowly. Later, we helped put up new shelves in the kitchen and after that, we went to a garden shop to buy plants. The place looked like a botanical garden with so many different exotic and tropical plants and flowers.

In the afternoon, the girls went to a nail and hair salon to get their nails done. In the evening we had a traditional Filipino dinner in the Nepahut, our little nice little spot in the garden. After dinner, we watched a local basketball game nearby. It was great to see how the whole community—young and old—came together to enjoy the game.

Visiting Family and Friends

On Thursday morning, we planted the new flowers and plants in the garden. We look forward to come back to see how much they have grown. Later, Zara, Jasmine, and I visited Agzam Resort again to swim in the pool and chill out. On the way back, we met a cousin who owns a restaurant nearby. She was surprised to see how much the girls had grown in the last two years.

In the afternoon, we visited Melanie’s old neighborhood, where she grew up and went to school. We met her old school friend, who had prepared cakes and drinks for us. She has two sons, and her oldest is the same age as Zara. The husband is a seamann and was away for 8 months around the world. In the evening, we went for a dinner at a local restaurant called Backyard, which also had live music. The food was great, and the place felt really cozy.

Celebrations and Small Trip

On the way back from dinner, we stopped by the town hall square. There was a big celebration because Aklan was celebrating its 69th anniversary. People were enjoying a concert, also to celebrate their history. Since it was also May 1st, which is Labor Day, most people have a day off..

On Friday, I took a short trip to visit a nearby beach and waterfall, about 40 minutes away by tricycle with a very local atmosphere—not as white sand as Boracay’s, but still nice. Beaches near Kalibo usually have darker sand.

The girls spent their last day in Kalibo shopping and getting a hair treatment. Later, I had a relaxing massage with Melanie. A one-hour massage costs around 6-8 USD here.

Next stop Manila

Friday evening, we packed our bags and got ready for our flight to Manila the next day. Looking back, Kalibo was more than just a place to visit—it was about meeting family and friends, enjoying local traditions, and appreciating the simple joys of life.

We will spend the last two days here in Manila visiting family and doing some final shopping and sightseeing before heading back home Monday afternoon.
