After four great days in Kalibo, we said goodbye and flew to Manila. It was a short 50-minute flight. When we arrived, Melanie’s sister, Melinda, and her husband picked us up. We spent the afternoon at their home, catching up. Melinda’s son, JB, was also there. He is 20 years old now and going to IT college. They got a new puppy, and Jasmine loved it. She has been asking for a dog for a long time, and this cute little one made her want one even more.
Exploring Manila
Melinda and her son JB stayed with us at our hotel in Malate, a busy downtown area near the Manila bay. In the evening, we went to Robinsons Mall and had dinner at a Japanese restaurant.
The next morning, Melanie, Melinda, and I woke up early for a jog at Manila Bay. There was a running and biking event, so the bay was full of people exercising. It was great to see Filipinos staying active, even though the weather is very hot. This summer has been extra hot in Manila—up to 36 C degrees at noon. The humidity makes it feel even warmer.
Visiting Intramuros
Later that morning, we took a Jeepney, the traditional Filipino bus, to Intramuros. This walled city was built by the Spanish in 1571 and was the center of government during the colonial period. Inside, there were big churches, old houses, and important buildings. During World War II, Intramuros was mostly destroyed, but many parts have been rebuilt to keep its history alive. We walked through Fort Santiago, San Agustin Church, and other places, learning more about the past.
Final Shopping and Last Dinner
After our visit to Intramuros, I took the kids to Mall of Asia, the biggest mall in the Philippines, for some shopping. In the evening, Melanie’s brother joined us for Korean dinner.
Heading Home
Today, we are flying back to Switzerland after three weeks in the Philippines with short stop overs in Shanghai and Singapore.
We had such a great time—seeing new places, meeting new people, and reconnecting with family and old friends. The trip was a mix of relaxing moments and fun adventures, including diving, snorkeling, jogging, and exploring different islands.
Trip Highlights in a few Numbers:
- 6 flights
- 8 pump boats
- 8 minibuses
- 1 sailing boat trip
- Countless tricycle rides
- 9 runs or jogs
- 2 train rides
- 8 islands
- 1 scuba dive
- Lots of snorkeling and swimming
We are excited to go home, but we will miss the Philippines and look forward to our next trip!
