We just spent four great days on Boracay Island. Coming from the quiet Romblon Islands, arriving on Boracay was quite a “culture chock” and full of action, with sports and music events going on, because of the LaBoracay & Love Boracay events going on (plus it’s high / holiday season). The island was quite packed with people, mostly Filipino tourists, but we saw a few Europeans, Australians and Americans too.

Our First Day on Boracay

After a six-hour trip by pump boats and minibus, we arrived on Boracay from Romblon Friday afternoon. We stayed at the CocoLoco Resort in Station 3. It’s a classic resort with a charming style and small tropical garden and bar/restaurant right at the front beach, in the quieter southern part of White Beach. That afternoon & evening, we enjoyed walking on the beach, swimming and watching the beautiful sunset.

Morning Exercise and Old Friends

On Tuesday, Melanie and I went for an early morning jog along White Beach. The beach was already busy with sports events like dragon boat race and beach tennis. We were happy to meet our old friends Jenny and Thomas. I used to work with Jenny back in 2005 when I was a diving instructor here. They still live on the island, and Thomas has his own architecture company. He came there as a young backpacker around the same time I was there.

The rest of the day we hung out at our resort, visited DMall for some shopping, and got a massage. In the evening, we went to a Filipino restaurant called Subo, where we experienced a traditional Filipino dance.

Exploring and a Boat Adventure

Sunday morning, we jogged to Bulabog Beach, which is on the windy side of the island. This beach is perfect for kite and windsurfing. Zara spent most of her day working on her school project. She’s making a photo album with miniature figures she’s been photographing in different places, that needs to be delivered shortly after our return home.

Later in the afternoon, we sailed on a traditional Filipino Paraw outrigger sailing boat - always great fun. For dinner, we went to a special restaurant called “The Hobbit,” where all the staff are “little people” (dwarfs).

A Day of Scuba Diving

Monday was all about the underwater world. Zara and Jasmine had their first “proper” scuba diving experience. After the PADI training and practice in shallow water, we went to a dive site called Coral Garden. It’s great for beginners, with a depth of only 4 to 10 meters. They both did amazing and had a great experience!

Afterward, we had lunch with Jenny and Thomas at the dive shop - nice to catch up.

Goodbye, Boracay

Today was our last day at Boracay for this time. We’re heading back to Kalibo this afternoon. Before we went, we had a nice final lunch with Thomas and Jenny. Boracay is still beautiful, especially the quieter southern part of White Beach with its soft white sand, clear blue water, and palm trees. Till next time!
