After arriving in Kalibo (Aklan, Panay Island, Visayas) we explored the city in the afternoon. Over the years, Kalibo has grown, with better roads and lively shopping spots. Still, it keeps its small-town charm, with busy streets and many places under construction.
We started by buying flowers and visiting the cemetery where Melanie’s parents are buried. After that, we did some shopping and enjoyed the busy atmosphere of the city. As the sun went down, we walked around the wet market. It was full of fresh veggies, fruits, seafood, and meats. We brought home lots of fresh food, which turned into a tasty dinner. It was a great way to end our first day.
The next morning, I went for a run at 6:00 AM. It was already hot at 28 degrees, but the breeze and morning shade made it okay. Running about 7-8 km in the quiet surroundings was wonderful, and the cold shower afterwards helped me cool off.
After some more shopping in Kalibo, we had lunch at home. After that, we headed to Tigayon Hills. The hills are known as the highest point in the area and hold a lot of historical and cultural significance. They once served as a secret sanctuary for Aklan’s freedom fighters, and some locals believe the hills were enchanted. Tigayon Hills offer visitors a chance to explore lush vegetation, nice views of the Aklan River, and the surrounding countryside. On top of the hill, there is a small chapel. The hills are also home to several caves with interesting limestone formations.
During our visit, we joined the Easter tradition of lighting candles and making the symbolic walk to the top, stopping at different stations along the way. By the time we reached the top, we were surrounded by a lively community celebrating the occasion. It was a memorable experience. Later, Jasmine, Zara, and I took a short tricycle ride to Agzam Resort. It’s a peaceful place with a swimming pool where we’ve had good memories, like Zara’s 4th birthday party with over 100 guests. The resort also has a relaxing area and a nice restaurant, so it’s always a great place to visit. We spent the afternoon swimming and having fun by the pool.
In the evening, we went back home to play some games. After that, we had an nice dinner with barbecue spareribs, fish, and other Filipino dishes.
Today is a big day in Kalibo—the Easter parade. It’s a colorful tradition here. All the shops are closed, and the streets are calm, waiting for the event. Later, around 4 or 5 PM, we’ll head to Kalibo Center to watch the parade. Until then, we’re enjoying the relaxed pace and quiet day.
